Two men are facing assault and armed criminal action charges in McDonald County after an altercation with floaters and boaters Sunday near Mary's Big Rock on the Elk River near Pineville.
According to court documents, Khoa Luu, 28, of Fort Smith, Ark., allegedly used a knife with a foot long blade shaped like a samurai sword to stab John Simon is about 3:45 p.m. Sunday on the river between Route H and Highway 59 that runs between Pineville and Noel that is a popular destination for water enthusiasts.
Deputy Michael Hall writes in the probable cause statement used for the basis of the charge that Simon, age and address not available, was taken to an unspecified Arkansas hospital with a 5-inch laceration on to his abdomen, causing “an evisceration,” or exposure of his bowels. McDonald County Sheriff Robert Evenson says, "he had to have about two-and-a-half feet of his intestines removed as a result of the assault."

Also charged in the incident is Daniel Dong Kwak, 21, of Potwin, Kan. According to court records, Kwak has been charged with attempted first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Deputy Christopher Allen writes in the probable cause statement in Kwak's case that he put the same sword type knife used to assault Simon up to canoeist Sarah Dahlstrom's face and said, “Bitch, shut up, or I will slit your throat." Dahlstrom told Allen that she "had to jump over her canoe to get away from (Kwak)” during the altercation.
Court documents do not indicate what led up to either altercation.
Both men, who have pleaded not guilty, were released from the McDonald County jail after posting $5,000 bond. Both Kwak and Luu are to scheduled to appear in court on July 26th.
