A Stone County, Arkansas man has been charged with second-degree murder for the shooting death of his girlfriends son.
Authorities found 21-year-old Randy Matney dead on his mother's front porch in Pleasant Grove with a gunshot wound to the face on February 26th.
Arkansas State Police spokesman Dennis Simons says that Matney's mother, Patty James, and his brother, Chris, told them Jody Stephen Nelson, 45, had been firing a handgun at stray dogs when his gun malfunctioned. Cops say the Matney's told them Nelson was trying to repair the gun when it misfired, killing Matney.
When investigators returned to the family home Saturday, Matney's relatives told them they had lied and that Nelson shot Matney during an argurment.
Nelson, who is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, is in the Stone County jail on $100,000 bond.
