Maverick Pleads Guilty To Impersonating Cop:

Mark "Maverick" Sager

The man who posed as a cop last summer in Stone County has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Stone County Prosecutor Matt Selby tells the Ozarks Sentinel that Mark "Maverick" Sager was scheduled for a bench trial in Galena on Monday ( Mar 8), but instead entered a guilty plea.

Sager, who told cops in Stone County that he was a retired ATF agent, was continually showing up at traffic stops and crime scenes to "assist" authorities or "back them up" in their investigations. Stone County sheriff's deputies became suspicious of his claims and conducted a background check on Maverick.

What they found was alarming, Sager had been charged with capital murder for the September 2, 1977, death of 14 year-old Julie Wittmeyer. Wittmeyer was a classmate of Sager's in Platte County (northern Kansas City.) A jury convicted Sager of manslaughter in Wittmeyer's death.

Sager was arrested on his houseboat in Indian Point in late June and charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Selby says, "He (Sager aka "Maverick") was given a 90 day suspended sentence and placed on probation for two years. He forfeited all of the "cop" gear- air guns, batons, belts, badges, sirens, lights, handcuffs, etc. - to the sheriff's office.

An order of protection was filed against Sager in Greene County by his girlfriend in late June, court records show it was promptly dismissed by the court because the filing party filed the ex parte in Greene County instead of Stone County.

Sager no longer lives on his houseboat in Indian Point. Online court records show Sager now lives in Kearney-Missouri.

  1. Mark E. Sager is Nuts and has used my name defrauding people out of money for years. He tells people I'm his uncle, which I'm not. I'm a Retired Kansas City Missouri Police Officer and was involved with searching for the Victim Julie Wittmeyer prior to Sager's arrest on Capitol Murder In Platte County Missouri in 1977-78. Mark Sager Is Dangerous. If ever he uses my name, "Christopher Sager" Ret. KCMOPD, Call the police and report it. I never ever knew Mark Sager until his arrest for Murder. My family came from Baltimore MD. and had no blood relations here in KC. If you see him or he speaks with any of you, report it. He is what we call in the PD per policy:> a 10-32-J1. Which is a Murder subject and the police have to complete a report on him. That tracks Sager at all locations....
